Sunni Islam is the largest branch of Islam in the world.

It is also the largest religious group on Earth. The name comes from the word sunna, which means the practices of Muhammad.

Sunnis aim to follow the right path established by these traditions. This belief system focuses on unity and following established ways of living. Many people find meaning in these shared practices and histories.

To understand how Sunnis live, we look at their main sources. They use the Quran, which is their holy book. They also use hadith, which are reports about Muhammad.

A third source is ijma, or the agreement of scholars. These sources help them create rules for daily life and law. They use four different legal schools to help them study these rules. These schools are called the Hanafi, Hanbali, Maliki, and Shafi'i schools.

The history of this group involves many important leaders. Sunnis believe that Muhammad did not pick a specific successor. They believe his companion Abu Bakr was the first rightful caliph.

They also honor the leaders Umar and Uthman. While they respect Ali, they view the first four leaders differently than Shia Muslims do. These four leaders are known as the rightly-guided caliphs. This period is a very important part of their history.

Many names and dates help define the Sunni tradition. For example, the scholar Abu Hanifa lived until the year 769. Another scholar, Ibn Hazm, taught in the year 1064.

The term "ahl as-sunna wa l-jama'ah" describes the community. This phrase can mean the people of the sunna and the community. Some scholars use this to show they follow the path of the salaf. The salaf are the predecessors who lived early in Islamic history.

Today, Sunni Islam connects to many different cultures and places. You can see its influence in beautiful buildings like the Hagia Sophia.

It also connects to large mosques like the Masjid Istiqlal.

People follow different theological schools like the Ash'ari or Maturidi schools. These schools help them understand matters of faith and belief. Even with many different schools, the focus remains on the shared foundations of the Quran and sunna.
