Islamic law is known as Sharia. To understand this law, scholars use different sources called Masdar or Dalil.

These sources help people figure out how to live according to their faith. The most important sources are the primary ones. These are the Qur'an and the Sunnah. They provide the foundation for everything else. Most Muslims look to these first to find guidance.

The first primary source is the Qur'an. Muslims believe these are the direct words of God. These words were revealed to the prophet Muhammad. The verses were revealed in Mecca and Medina. Some verses focus on deep ideas about God. Other verses focus on how to run a society. About one thirteenth of the verses deal with legal rules. These rules cover social, political, and economic life.

The second primary source is the Sunnah. This refers to the traditions of Muhammad. It includes his words and his actions. It also includes things he did not say but allowed. These stories are often found in books called Hadith.

Scholars study the Hadith very carefully to ensure they are true. They look at the chain of people who told the story. This is called an isnad. They check if the people were honest and had good memories. This helps them decide if a report is undubitable or isolated.

Sometimes, the primary sources do not answer every new question. This is when jurists use secondary sources. One way is called ijma, which means consensus. This is when experts all agree on a rule. Sunni jurists think ijma is very important. Shi'ite jurists see it as a secondary source. Different groups have different ideas about who can participate in consensus. For example, the Maliki school looks at the agreement of people in Medina.

Another secondary source is qiyas, or analogical reason. This is a way of using logic to find answers. A jurist looks at a new problem. They then compare it to an old rule from the primary sources. This helps the law work in new situations. Most Sunni schools use this method. However, Shi'ite jurisprudence uses the intellect instead of analogy. This helps the faith stay relevant as the world changes.
