A madhhab is a school of thought within Islamic jurisprudence. This means it is a specific way of understanding and applying Islamic law.

Many people follow these schools to help guide their daily lives and religious practices. These schools are not separate religions, but different ways of interpreting the same faith. They allow for variety in how people practice their beliefs. Some people choose to follow one school strictly, while others may not belong to any madhhab at all.

Each school has a specific way of finding answers to legal questions. They use a set order of priority to decide what is correct. For example, most schools start with the Quran and the Sunnah. The Hanafi school also uses individual opinions of the Sahabah and a method called Qiyas. The Maliki school places great importance on the living traditions of the people in Medina. The Shafi'i school follows a specific path through the Quran, Sunnah, and consensus. The Hanbali school is known for its very strict adherence to the Quran and Hadith.

These schools began to form and grow many centuries ago. In the early years of Islam, legal views were often tied to local cities like Mecca or Kufa. By the ninth and tenth centuries, the major Sunni madhhabs began to consolidate. The four main Sunni schools are the Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali. These schools are named after the famous scholars who founded them. By the twelfth century, most Islamic legal experts aligned themselves with one of these groups. Some older schools, like the Zahiri, eventually faded or became much smaller.

Different schools are most common in different parts of the world today. The Maliki school is predominant in North and West Africa. The Hanafi school is very common in South and Central Asia. The Shafi'i school is found mostly in East Africa and Southeast Asia. The Hanbali school is mainly in North and Central Arabia. There are also Shia schools, such as the Ja'fari, Zaydi, and Isma'ili schools. The Ibadi school is the main tradition found in Oman.

In the modern era, the way madhhabs work has changed quite a bit. Many countries now use codified state laws instead of only following traditional rules. These state laws sometimes combine different rulings from several schools at once. This process is sometimes called takhayyur or talfiq. Today, many legal professionals are trained in modern law schools. While many scholars still follow traditional methods, some newer thinkers seek more independence. They look directly at the original religious texts to find their own answers.
