It is part of Sunni Islam and helps people decide how to live their faith. This school is very large today. It has about 500 million followers worldwide. That number is about 25% of all Muslims. It is the second largest of the four Sunni schools. It is larger than the Shafi'i school but smaller than the Hanafi school.

This school has a unique way of finding answers to important questions. Many followers look to the "living Sunnah." This means they study the traditions and customs of the people of Medina. They believe the way people lived in that city is a great guide. They use the Quran as their first source. Next, they look at mass-transmitted sayings and actions of Muhammad. They also value the customs of the people of Medina. They use these traditions to help make their legal rulings.

Imam Malik ibn Anas started this school in the 8th century. He was a native of the city of Medina. He was a student of Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq. This means he is connected to the Prophet Muhammad through his teacher. Malik wrote a very famous book called the Muwatta. This book contains many sayings and his own helpful comments. It is so complete that followers see it as a perfect guide. His students, like Ibn Qasim, also wrote important books like the Al-Mudawwana.

History shows that the Maliki school spread to many different places. It was once very strong in Spain and Sicily. Under the Umayyads, it was even the official law of the land. In those times, Maliki judges had a lot of power. The school also grew very strong in North and West Africa. Today, it is the main school in those regions. It is also common in the Gulf states like Bahrain, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates. Even in Saudi Arabia, the Eastern Province has been a Maliki area for a long time.

The school also connects to other ways of practicing faith. For a long time, some Malikis were cautious about mystical practices. However, they eventually learned from Sufi traditions. Many Muslims today follow both Maliki law and Sufi orders. One very important center for this tradition is the Great Mosque of Kairouan.
