Malik worked hard to organize religious knowledge into a clear system. His most famous work is a book called al-Muwatta. The name al-Muwatta means a "smoothed path." He wrote this book to help people through different opinions. It serves as a survey of law, justice, and religious practice. The book is based on the consensus of people in Medina. It is one of the oldest surviving books of Muslim law. Some scholars even called it the soundest book after the Quran.

He said that knowing outward laws helps open the heart to deeper truths. Malik was also careful about how people described God. He believed it was wrong to compare God to human beings. He taught that some things about God are simply unknown to us. His teachings continue to guide many people today.
