He lived a long time ago, from 767 to 820 CE. He is best known for creating a systematic way to study Islamic law. This study is called jurisprudence. He wrote a very important book called al-Risala. This work helped set the rules for how scholars should find answers. Because of his ideas, he started the Shafi'i school of thought. This is one of the four main paths in Sunni Islam. His teachings changed how future generations studied religion.

Learning was a huge part of his life from the start. Al-Shafi'i was born in Gaza, Palestine. His family was part of the Quraysh tribe. Even though his family had high connections, he grew up very poor. His mother moved him to Mecca when he was two years old. He was so poor that he sometimes wrote lessons on animal bones. By age seven, he had memorized the whole Quran. At age ten, he had memorized a famous book called the Muwatta. He was even allowed to give legal rulings by age fifteen.

Al-Shafi'i traveled to many different lands to learn. He went to Medina to study under the famous teacher Malik ibn Anas. He respected Malik so much that he always called him "the Teacher." Later, he moved to Baghdad in Iraq. There, he studied with other scholars like al-Shaybani. He even served as a governor in the city of Najran in Yemen. During this time, he faced hard moments in politics. He was once brought in chains to see a leader named Harun al-Rashid. His clever speaking helped him stay out of trouble.

In his later years, Al-Shafi'i moved to Egypt.

This was where his teaching had its biggest impact. He lived in a place called al-Fustat. He worked with many students who wrote down his words. These students helped keep his ideas accurate for the future. He also met a woman named al-Sayyidah Nafisah. She helped support his studies during this time. Al-Shafi'i died in Egypt when he was 54 years old. Some say he died from an attack, while others say he was sick.

Today, we remember Al-Shafi'i for his organized way of thinking. He taught that scholars should look at sources in a specific order. First, they look at the Qur'an. Next, they look at Hadith, which are the words and actions of Muhammad. Then, they look at Ijma, which is when the community agrees. Finally, they use Qiyas, which is a way of using logic.
