Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi was a very important scholar in Islamic history. He lived during the 13th century and was a master of many subjects. People call him a jurist, which means he studied Islamic law. He was also a hadith scholar, meaning he studied the sayings of the Prophet.

Because of his great work, he is known as one of the Two Shaykhs. This title honors him and another scholar named Abu al-Qasim al-Rafi'i. His ideas helped shape the Shafi'i school of law for many years.

Al-Nawawi's life was defined by a deep love for learning. He was born in a place called Nawa near Damascus, Syria. As a young boy, he preferred reciting the Qur'an over playing games with other children. When he reached age 18, he moved to Damascus to study even more. He spent his days learning from more than twenty different master teachers. These teachers taught him about law, language, and the principles of faith. He was known to study for 12 hours and then teach for another 12 hours.

He was a man of great discipline and focus. Some scholars say he wrote more than 40 pages every single day. From age 18 until he died, he never stopped his academic work. He wrote at least fifty books during his short life. His books covered many topics like ethics, manners, and religious rules. One of his most famous books is called the Forty Hadiths. Another very popular work is titled Riyadh as-Saaliheen, which is about good conduct.

Al-Nawawi was also known for being very brave when speaking to leaders. He once faced the Mamluk Sultan Rukn al-Din Baybars. The Sultan had put a heavy tax on the people during a drought. Al-Nawawi told the ruler that his actions were wrong. Even when the Sultan threatened to kick him out of the city, Al-Nawawi stayed firm. He believed it was his duty to give honest advice to rulers. In another story, he told the Sultan not to be greedy with money. The Sultan actually listened to his advice and changed his ways.

Al-Nawawi died on December 21, 1277, at the age of 45. Even though he died young, his legacy is still very large today. His books are used by many different groups of people in the Muslim world. People still study his writings on law and ethics in many places. His life shows how much one person can do through hard work and courage. Even his simple way of living left a mark on history. His tomb in Syria was later destroyed during a war in 2015.
