He lived during the 15th century. People call him a polymath because he knew so much. A polymath is someone who studies many different subjects. He was a master of many Islamic sciences. These included law, history, and language. He was even a master of hadith. Hadith are the recorded sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad. Because he knew so much, he earned a very rare title. This title was Shaykh al-Islam.

He is known as one of the most prolific writers ever. This means he wrote a huge number of books.

Al-Suyuti had a very busy life of learning. He grew up in Cairo in the Mamluk Sultanate. His father was a teacher of law. Sadly, his father died when Al-Suyuti was very young. He lived in an orphanage in the city. By the age of eight, he had memorized the whole Qur'an. He spent his life studying under about 150 different teachers. These teachers were the best experts in their fields. He studied many things like medicine and math. He even learned about timekeeping. He traveled far to find more knowledge. He visited places like India, Iraq, and Mali. He also traveled to Syria and Yemen.

He spent many years teaching and working in public. He began teaching law when he was only 18. He once became the head master of Hadith in Cairo. In 1486, a ruler named Sultan Qaitbay gave him a job at a Sufi lodge. However, some other scholars were unhappy with this. This caused him to lose his job. Later in his life, he decided to leave public life behind. He moved to a quiet garden near the River Nile. He wanted to be alone in the garden. It was during this quiet time that he wrote most of his books. He wrote about 600 works while living in solitude.

Al-Suyuti was a very famous and sometimes controversial figure. He wrote approximately one thousand different works. Some people thought he was very wise. Other scholars criticized him for being too proud. He even had arguments with his own teachers. One teacher criticized a thinker named Ibn Arabi. Al-Suyuti wrote a book to defend him. He believed Ibn Arabi was a holy person. He also faced accusations of plagiarism. These were claims that he copied others. However, those accusations were later dropped. He was a very important leader in the Shafi'i school of thought.

His books reached people all over the world. Even in his own time, his writing traveled to India. He wrote about many different topics. He wrote about how to treat illnesses like smallpox. He also wrote about the history of leaders. Some of his most famous books include the Tafsir al-Jalalayn. He also wrote a large work about angels. His writings covered over 700 different subjects.
