Claudius Ptolemy was a famous thinker from long ago.

He was a mathematician, astronomer, and geographer. He lived in the city of Alexandria in Egypt. This place was part of the Roman Empire at that time. Because of his name, we think he was a Roman citizen. He wrote about twelve different books on science. Three of these books were very important for many centuries. They helped people in the Byzantine and Islamic worlds learn about the universe.

Ptolemy spent most of his time studying the stars. His most famous book was called the Almagest. This book was a huge guide for anyone watching the sky. He used math to show how the Sun and Moon move. He also made a list of forty-eight constellations. These are groups of stars that people can see with their eyes.

He even made special tables called the Handy Tables. These tables helped people calculate where planets would be in the future. They also helped people predict when eclipses would happen.

Ptolemy used a special way to explain how the sky works. He believed in a geocentric model. This means he thought the Earth stayed still at the center of everything. He thought the Sun, Moon, and planets moved around our world. To make this idea work, he used complex shapes called epicycles. These were small circles that planets moved along while they moved around Earth. For over a thousand years, almost everyone believed his model was correct.

We do not know exactly when Ptolemy was born. Some people think he was born in a city called Ptolemais Hermiou. He likely lived and died in Alexandria. We can guess when he died by looking at how much he wrote. Most experts think he died sometime in the 160s or 170s AD.

His work was so famous that it was translated into many languages. People in Spain and Sicily translated his books into Latin during the 12th century. This helped his ideas spread all across the world.

Today, scientists look at Ptolemy's work in a new way. They have found some mistakes in his math and his star lists. Some scientists even argued that he made up some of his numbers. They thought he changed data to make his theories look right. However, other scholars disagree with these harsh ideas. They think his errors might come from old tools or the air.

Even with these mistakes, his books changed how we see the world. He helped start the long journey of understanding space.
