The 9th-century Persian astronomer Abu Ma'shar al-Balkhi mistakenly claimed that Ptolemy was a member of the royal Ptolemaic dynasty of Egypt. This dynasty was founded by Ptolemy I Soter. While many pharaohs shared the name Ptolemy, modern scholars agree that the astronomer was not part of this royal family. Instead, he was likely ethnically Greek or a Hellenized Egyptian. Modern scientists have scrutinized Ptolemy's data with great intensity. Some researchers have identified patterns of error in his calculations. For example, one error involved measurements he claimed were taken at noon, but which appeared to be taken at 12:30 pm. In 1977, Robert R. Newton published a book accusing Ptolemy of being a fraud. Newton argued that Ptolemy fabricated or doctored data to fit his theories. One specific example cited was an autumn equinox observation that was off by many hours. However, other scholars, such as Owen Gingerich, have defended him. They suggest errors might result from atmospheric refraction or the warping of ancient instruments.

Recent discoveries have added new layers to the debate over Ptolemy's accuracy. In 2022, researchers found Greek fragments of a lost star catalogue by the astronomer Hipparchus. This discovery helped disprove older claims that Ptolemy had simply copied Hipparchus' work. Instead, the evidence suggests Ptolemy created his catalogue by combining many different sources.
