Later, people found a new way to look at space. They learned that the Sun is actually the center. This changed how we see our world.

Many thinkers studied this. A man named Ptolemy made a famous system. He used circles to explain how planets move.
This idea was used for over 1,500 years. It helped people make charts of the sky. Later, thinkers like Copernicus and Galileo found a new way. They showed that the Sun is actually the center. This new idea is called heliocentrism.

Different thinkers had different ideas about how the spheres worked. Aristotle believed the Earth was a sphere at the center. He thought many transparent, rotating spheres surrounded the Earth. These were called crystalline spheres and were made of a substance called aether.
Eventually, the geocentric model was replaced by a new idea. This new way of thinking is called heliocentrism. It places the Sun at the center instead of the Earth.
Geocentrism is an astronomical model that places the Earth at the center of the universe. In this view, the Sun, Moon, stars, and planets all orbit around our world. This model was the primary way many civilizations described the cosmos for a very long time. It was the dominant view in ancient Europe and during the Islamic Golden Age. 
People believed in geocentrism because of two main observations. First, the Earth feels solid, stable, and stationary to anyone standing on it. Second, the sky appears to move around us every single day. The Sun seems to revolve around the Earth once every 24 hours. The stars also appear to rotate around the Earth's poles once per day. 
Many Greek philosophers developed different versions of this model. In the 4th century BC, Plato described the Earth as a stationary sphere at the center. He imagined the celestial bodies were carried on spheres in a specific order. These included the Moon, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Later, Aristotle expanded on these ideas with a complex system. He proposed that the Earth was surrounded by 47 to 55 transparent, rotating spheres called crystalline spheres. These spheres were made of a substance called aether, which was considered an incorruptible material. Aristotle believed the Moon was in the innermost sphere, which explained its phases and dark spots.
In the 2nd century AD, the astronomer Claudius Ptolemy standardized the geocentric model. His work, known as the Ptolemaic system, became the basis for astronomical charts for over 1,500 years.
To improve accuracy further, Ptolemy introduced a concept called the equant. The equant was a specific point near the center of a planet's orbit. From this point, the center of the planet's epicycle always appeared to move at a uniform speed. This helped the model account for the different lengths of the seasons.
Geocentrism was not only a Greek idea. In India, astronomers worked on similar systems to predict the motions of the Sun and planets. By the year 1500, the astronomer Nilakantha Somayaji developed a single approach for all the planets. Earlier, the astronomer Aryabhata had argued that the Earth rotated, even though his overall system remained geocentric.
Changing from geocentrism to heliocentrism was a slow and difficult process. Heliocentrism is the model that places the Sun at the center.
