For a long time, people had a big idea about space. They believed in geocentrism. This is the idea that Earth is at the center of the universe.

Ptolemaic Model

In this model, the Sun, Moon, and stars all move around us.

Why did they believe this? There were two main reasons. First, the Earth feels very still. It feels solid and does not seem to move. Second, the sky looks like it is moving. We see the Sun travel across the sky every day. The stars also seem to spin around us once a day.

Many thinkers studied this. A man named Ptolemy made a famous system. He used circles to explain how planets move.

He said planets move in small circles called epicycles. These small circles move along a larger path. This helped explain why planets sometimes seem to move backward.

This idea was used for over 1,500 years. It helped people make charts of the sky. Later, thinkers like Copernicus and Galileo found a new way. They showed that the Sun is actually the center. This new idea is called heliocentrism.
