What shape is our world? Most people know it is a sphere. A sphere is a shape like a ball.

Greek thinkers first wrote about this long ago. They lived around the 5th century BC. Later, sailors sailed all the way around the world. This proved the Earth was round. People even made globes to show its shape.

But Earth is not a perfect ball. It is an oblate ellipsoid. This means it is a bit fat in the middle. This happens because the Earth spins. The spin creates a force. This force pulls the middle outward.

Earth is also a little lumpy. This is because of the different materials inside it. Some parts are heavier than others. Gravity pulls harder on those parts. Even the Sun and Moon change Earth's shape. Their gravity pulls on our oceans. This creates tides. Scientists who study Earth's shape use geodesy. This is the study of Earth's size and shape.
