Hipparchus was a brilliant Greek thinker from a very long time ago.

He was a mathematician, a geographer, and an astronomer. Many people call him the "father of astronomy" because of his great work.

He was born in Nicaea, which was in a place called Bithynia. He likely spent his later years on the island of Rhodes. He is remembered as one of the greatest observers of the sky in ancient history. His work helped people understand how the heavens move.

One of his biggest jobs was studying the moon and the sun.

He wanted to know how they moved through the sky. To do this, he used math to create accurate models. He was the first person to make models that show how they move using numbers. He also studied the moon's speed. He found that the moon does not move at the same speed all the time. This changing speed is called its anomaly. He used math to track these changes very carefully.

Hipparchus was also a master of math. He is often called the "father of trigonometry." Trigonometry is a branch of math that studies the relationships in triangles.

He created trigonometric tables to help solve hard problems. These tables used a tool called a chord function. A chord is a straight line that connects two points on a circle. He used these math tools to figure out the orbits of the sun and moon. This made his astronomical predictions much more accurate.

He did not work alone in his mind. Hipparchus used many old ideas from other people. He looked at records from the Babylonians to help his work.

He also used ideas from thinkers like Eratosthenes and Aristarchus of Samos. He was very good at using these old observations to find new truths. He even made a huge list of stars. This was the first big star catalog in the western world. He may have used a tool called an armillary sphere to help him.

His work connects to how we see the world today. Even though he lived in the second century BC, his ideas still matter.

He discovered something called the precession of the equinoxes. This is a slow change in how the Earth points toward the stars. He also studied how light works. This helped the science of optics grow. Today, we still use the math he started to study the stars. His legacy lives on in every telescope and math book.
