He is most famous for measuring the size of the Earth.

He used the sun and shadows to do this work. He looked at two cities named Alexandria and Syene. At noon on a summer day, Syene had no shadows. However, Alexandria still had shadows from a vertical rod. He measured the shadow angle to be 7.2 degrees. This angle was 1/50 of a full circle. He knew the distance between the cities was 5,000 stadia. By multiplying that distance by 50, he found the Earth's circumference.

Cyrene was in a place that is now part of Libya. He was the son of a man named Aglaos. As a young man, he studied many things in a gymnasium. Later, he went to Athens to learn even more. He studied with many famous teachers there. Some people called him "Pentathlos." This name means he was like an all-around athlete. This was because he was good at every area of learning.

He also made many discoveries in math and time. He created a way to find prime numbers. This method is called the "sieve of Eratosthenes."

He was also a founder of scientific chronology. This means he used old records to find dates for history. He used Egyptian and Persian records to study the Trojan War. He estimated that the sack of Troy happened in 1184 BC. He even calculated the tilt of the Earth's axis. His math was very accurate for his time.

Eratosthenes lived a very long life for that era. He reached the age of 80 years old. He died around 196 BC in the city of Alexandria. Some people even called him "Beta." They called him this because they thought he always came in second place. However, his work changed how we see the world. He showed us how to use math to understand nature. His ideas helped people map the whole planet. We still use his ideas in geography today.
