Al-Juwayni was a very famous Persian scholar of the Sunni faith. He lived during the 11th century and was a master of many subjects. He was an expert in Islamic law and theology. Many people called him a leading master of the two holy cities. This special title was Imam al-Haramayn. This name refers to the cities of Mecca and Medina. He was highly respected for his deep thinking and his many books.

His work focused on understanding what people should and should not do. He was a key figure in the Shafi'i school of law. He was also a major leader in the Ash'ari school of theology. Al-Juwayni believed that holy texts held the answers to big questions. He did not like to guess about the law using only speculation. Instead, he looked closely at the written words of the faith. He wanted to find clear proofs for how people should live.

Al-Juwayni was born on February 17, 1028, in a village near Naysabur. His family was very important in the study of law. His father, Abu Muhammad al-Juwayni, was a well-known teacher. Al-Juwayni studied many subjects under his father's care. These included Arabic grammar, the Quran, and the study of hadith. He even studied all of his father's many books. This gave him a very strong start in his learning.

Life was not always easy for this great thinker. A governor once made rules that forced Al-Juwayni to flee his home. He had to leave Naysabur to find safety. He traveled to the cities of Mecca and Medina for four years. While there, he taught and wrote many important books. Later, he was invited back home to Naysabur. He became the headmaster of the Nizamiyya school. He stayed there for 30 years to train new students.

Al-Juwayni taught over 400 students during his long life. One of his most famous students was Abu Hamid al-Ghazali. Al-Ghazali also became a world-famous scholar in Islamic history. Al-Juwayni wrote many famous works like the book Al-Burhan. He also wrote the large book called Nihayat al-Matlab. He died in August 1085 from a liver disease. A huge crowd attended his funeral to honor him. His hard work left a mark on the world.
