Al-Qushayri was a very important Muslim scholar from a long time ago. He was born in 986 in a city called Nishapur. This city was located in the Khorasan province of Iran. At that time, Khorasan was a famous center for Islamic learning.

Al-Qushayri was a master of many different subjects. He studied law, grammar, and the holy Qur'an. He was also a scholar of Hadith, which are traditions about the Prophet. He combined these studies with a focus on Sufism. Sufism is a spiritual path focused on closeness to God.

His life changed when he moved to the city of Nishapur. As a young man, he studied the Arabic language and even weaponry. Then he met a great spiritual teacher named Abu Ali al-Daqqaq. Al-Qushayri became a student of this master at a religious school. He learned the mystical ways of Sufism from him. Later, Al-Qushayri married the teacher's daughter, Fatima. After his teacher died, Al-Qushayri became a leader himself.

He led the spiritual meetings in the school his father-in-law had built. This school later became known as the school of the Qushayri family.

Al-Qushayri traveled to many places during his life. He went on a pilgrimage and visited Baghdad and the Hijaz. During these trips, he listened to many famous Hadith scholars. He even taught Hadith in the palace of a Caliph in Baghdad. Some political trouble forced him to leave Nishapur for a while. However, he was able to return to his home later. He lived there until he died on December 30, 1072.

He was buried next to his father-in-law near their family school.

He wrote several books that people still study today. One very famous book is called the Epistle on Sufism. This book helped defend Sufi traditions and explained their history. He also wrote a book about the meanings of the Qur'an. In that work, he said there are four levels of meaning. The first level is for all believers to understand. The second level is for spiritual leaders. The third level is for saints. The final level is for prophets.

This way of thinking helped make him a top Sufi thinker.

Many people have been influenced by his great work. His writings helped inspire other famous scholars like Al-Ghazali. His books have been translated into many different languages. Even today, his ideas are used as a standard for Sufi thought. He left behind a large family, including six sons and several daughters. His life shows how one person can master many different paths of learning. He remains a key figure in the history of Islamic science and spirituality.
