His ideas helped shape how many people understand their faith.

Abu Hanifa had a very special way of finding answers. He used many tools to study Islamic law. He looked at the Qur'an and the stories of the prophet Muhammad. He also looked at what the whole community agreed upon. One big thing he did was use analogical reasoning. This means using logic to find a solution to a new problem. He was one of the first to make this a formal part of law. This helped his school become known for using reason and logic.

Historians have many different ideas about his early life. Most people believe he was born around 699 CE. Some scholars think he was born even earlier, in 689 CE. There is also a debate about where he was born. Many think he was born in Kufa, but others suggest Kabul or Anbar. His family background is also a topic of much study. Some say he was of Persian descent. Others believe he came from an Arab tribe called al-Azd.

During his life, Abu Hanifa worked as a merchant. He sold a type of silk cloth called khazz. He spent much of his time studying with great teachers. One of his main teachers was Hammad ibn Abi Sulayman. After Hammad died, Abu Hanifa became a top leader in Kufa. He had two very important students named Abu Yusuf and Muhammad al-Shaybani. These two men also became famous scholars in their own right. They helped spread his teachings to many other people.

Abu Hanifa lived a life of great independence. In 763 CE, a leader named al-Mansur offered him a job. He wanted Abu Hanifa to be the chief judge of the state. Abu Hanifa said no because he wanted to stay independent. This choice led to a very difficult time for him. He was arrested and put in prison by the caliph. He died in prison on August 15, 767 CE.
