Shaykh Tusi was a very important thinker in Shia history. He was a scholar of many different subjects. These included law, theology, and history. He was also a master of hadith. Hadith are recorded sayings and traditions. He was of Persian descent. Many people call him Shaykh al-Ta'ifah. This title shows how much respect people had for him.

His life was full of learning and hard work. Tusi started his education in his home of Tus, Iran. He later moved to the city of Baghdad to study more. There, he joined the learning circles of al-Shaykh al-Mufid. He also learned from Shaykh Murtaza. By the age of forty-two, he had studied many different schools of thought. He even studied with Sunni scholars.

Sometimes, life brings big changes and difficult times. In 1055, the Seljuk group took control of Baghdad. This led to fighting between different groups of Muslims. During this time, many libraries and mosques were destroyed. Tusi's own house was burned down. He lost many of the books he had written. Because of this, he moved to the city of Najaf.

In Najaf, Tusi did amazing things for his faith. Some scholars believe he started the Hawza of Najaf. This is a famous school for religious learning. He wrote over fifty different books. Two of his books are very special. They are called Tahdhib al-Ahkam and al-Istibsar. These are part of the Four Books of Shia hadith.

Tusi believed that reason was a very important tool. He thought people could use logic to understand religious laws. He argued that God provides the tools for people to be good. This way of thinking is called the Usuli school. He helped clarify how scholars could use these rules. His ideas were so strong that they lasted for a very long time. He died in Najaf on December 2, 1067.
