Nizam al-Mulk was a very important leader in the Seljuk Empire. He was a scholar and a vizier. A vizier is a top official who helps a ruler manage a country. He was born on April 10, 1018, in a small village named Radkan. His family lived in what is now Iran. His mother had a special dream about his future. She saw a woman of great dignity holding a child. Because of this, his family gave him the name Hasan.

As Hasan grew up, he worked his way up from a low position. He first worked for the Ghaznavid rulers in a city called Ghazni. Later, he joined the service of the Seljuk Turks around the year 1043. He became a top official for the province of Khorasan by 1059. He helped the leader Alp Arslan win important battles. After Alp Arslan became the ruler, he gave Hasan a new title. This title was Nizam al-Mulk. It means "Order of the Realm."

Nizam al-Mulk helped run the daily business of the empire. He worked for two different sultans named Alp Arslan and Malik Shah I. While the sultans led the army, Nizam handled the government. He created a way to pay soldiers using land and resources. This system helped the empire stay strong without needing constant new conquests. He also helped manage many different groups of people. These groups included Turks, Arabs, Greeks, and Slavs. He often chose to work with Iranian and Georgian soldiers.

He was also a man who loved learning and helping others. Nizam al-Mulk built many schools called Nizamiyyas in many different cities. These schools were in places like Baghdad, Isfahan, and Basra. He even spent fifty thousand dinars to build a hospital. He was known for being very kind and giving money to the poor. Every morning, he would give one hundred dinars to charity. He also wrote a famous book called the Siyasatnama. This book used stories to teach leaders how to rule with justice.

Life was not always easy for him because he had many enemies. Some people tried to hurt him or tell lies about his family. In 1092, Nizam al-Mulk was traveling from Isfahan to Baghdad. While he was on his journey, he was assassinated. A group known as the Assassins is said to have killed him with a dagger.
