He was born in 1933 in a place called Mazinan. His father was a teacher and a religious scholar. When Ali was a student, he saw many people living in poverty. He wanted to find ways to help these people. He used sociology to study how people live together. Sociology is the study of how societies work and change. He also studied the history of many different religions.

Shariati spent a lot of time studying in Paris, France.

In Paris, he learned about many new ideas. He read books by thinkers like Frantz Fanon. He also studied the history of religions with famous teachers. He wanted to combine modern ideas with Islamic principles. He thought these ideas could solve problems in Muslim societies. He even translated books to share these thoughts with others. This time in France helped him grow as a leader.

When he returned to Iran in 1964, life was very difficult.

He began teaching at the University of Mashhad. Later, he gave famous lectures in Tehran. His talks were very popular with many different people. Because his ideas were so strong, the government arrested him. He spent eighteen months in solitary confinement. People around the world eventually helped him get released in 1975. After that, he was allowed to leave for England.

Shariati had very specific ideas about how to change the world. He spoke about "red Shiism" to describe a revolutionary way of life. He wanted a society where no class was better than another. He believed religious values could help people fight for justice. He also thought religious leaders should guide people toward their best selves. However, he did not think religious leaders should be the rulers. He wanted the people to help choose their own leaders.

Sadly, Ali Shariati died in 1977 in Southampton, England.
