He was born in the city of Shiraz on 20 October 1819. His given name was ʿAlí Muḥammad. He came from a family of merchants who were known as sayyids. He believed he was a messenger of God. He taught that his role was to prepare the world for a much greater spiritual figure. He called this coming person "he whom God will make manifest." This leader would bring a message of global unity and peace. The Báb's teachings focused on the idea of progressive revelation. This is the belief that religion is renewed over time.

During his six years of leadership, the Báb wrote many books and letters. One of his important books was called the Persian Bayán.

He used his writings to suggest a new social order. He encouraged people to study the arts and the sciences. He also spoke about the importance of improving the status of women. He taught that people should investigate the truth for themselves. His message emphasized ethics, love, and serving other people. He even wrote rules for marriage and inheritance for a future society.

Many people found his message very powerful. His first follower was a man named Mullá Husayn. Soon, eighteen disciples known as the "Letters of the Living" joined him.

Even though he was popular with many, he faced strong opposition. The government and some religious leaders did not agree with his claims.

Because of this opposition, the Báb faced a very difficult end. He was executed in the city of Tabriz on 9 July 1850.

Historical accounts say he faced a firing squad of 750 rifles. After he died, his followers continued his work. Most of his followers eventually became part of the Baháʼí Faith. This faith was founded by Baháʼu'lláh in 1863. Today, the Baháʼí Faith has about 8 million members around the world. They view the Báb as a holy messenger of God.
