He was born Merwan Sheriar Irani on 25 February 1894 in Pune. His parents were Irani Zoroastrians. As a young boy, he was a poet and played many musical instruments. He even started a club to help people through charity. He believed he was the Avatar. This means he was the total manifestation of God in human form. He taught that the goal of all beings is to realize their own divinity.

His spiritual life changed deeply when he was 19 years old. He had a seven-year period of spiritual transformation. During this time, he met several important people. These included Hazrat Babajan and Upasni Maharaj. He also met Sai Baba of Shirdi, Tajuddin Baba, and Narayan Maharaj. Meher Baba later called these five people the Perfect Masters of the age. These encounters helped him understand his spiritual path. By 1922, he began to gather his own followers. They gave him the name Meher Baba, which means "compassionate father."

One of the most unique things about Meher Baba was his silence. In 1925, he began a 44-year period where he did not speak. He first used a chalk and slate to communicate. Later, he used an alphabet board to write messages. By 1954, he communicated entirely through hand gestures using an interpreter. This long silence was a very important part of his life. He also worked with people called masts. These were individuals who felt so close to God that they seemed to act differently from others. Meher Baba helped them progress on their spiritual journeys.

Meher Baba traveled to many parts of the world. He visited Europe and the United States starting in 1931. During a trip to England on the SS Rajputana, he met Mahatma Gandhi three times. He also met many famous actors and artists in Hollywood. Some people in the 1930s were very fascinated by him. In the United States, his following was estimated at 7,000 people by 1971. Some thinkers believe his movement was actually much larger than people realized. His influence even reached popular music through the slogan "Don't worry; be happy."

Today, Meher Baba's legacy lives on through his followers. Many people are known as "Baba lovers." They often make special journeys to visit his tomb. This tomb is called a samadhi. It is located at Meherabad, which is a place he established near Ahmednagar.
