The Suhrawardiyya is a special way of following the Sufi path. This group is a Sufi order, which is a way people practice their faith.

They focus on certain spiritual ways of life. One important practice is dhikr, which is a type of prayer. They also observe fasting during the holy month of Ramadan. This group follows classical Sufi doctrine in their beliefs. They do not have one single leader in charge of everyone. Because of this, the group eventually split into many different branches.

To spread their ideas, the group used special buildings. These buildings are called khanqahs, or Sufi lodges.

These lodges served as places for members to live and meet. They helped the order gain influence in many different societies. The order was very important during the Ilkhanate period from 1256 to 1335. During those years, it was one of the three leading Sufi orders. It was based in the area of western Iran. This helped their ideas travel through Persianate society.

Abu ’l-Najib Suhrawardi founded this order. He passed away in the year 1168.

His ideas were inspired by a man named Junayd of Baghdad. Junayd was a scholar and a mystic from Baghdad. He lived a long time before the order began. Many famous people later joined the Suhrawardiyya. The poet Saadi Shirazi was a member. He died in 1292. Another member was Abd al-Razzaq Kāshānī, who died in 1329. Sa'id al-Din Farghani was also a member, dying in 1300.

This order grew to be very large in India.

Three disciples of Shihāb al-Dīn Abū Ḥafṣ ʿUmar Suhrawardī helped establish it there. They started branches in Delhi, Bengal, and Multan. One very successful teacher was Bahāʾ al-Dīn Zakariyyāʾ Multānī. His disciple, Sayyid Djalāl Bukhārī, started the Jalali branch. The order also had a strong presence in Kashmir. A king named Rinchana converted to Islam because of Sayyid Sharaf al-Dīn. This man was also known as Bulbul Shah.

The Suhrawardiyya had close ties to many powerful rulers.

They influenced the Delhi Sultanate and the Gujarat Sultanate. They also worked with the Mughal Empire. While many orders in the Middle East have dissolved, this one is still active. You can find them in Iraq today. They continue to find and welcome new members there. The history of the order shows how ideas can travel across many lands and many centuries.
