The Shadhili order is a Sufi tariqah, which is a special path of faith. It is followed by millions of people around the world today. This group has been very important in places like Egypt and the Maghreb. Many followers are called Shadhilis or seekers. They have shared many ideas through Islamic literature. Some people even study this path at al-Azhar University in Cairo.

Many thinkers in this order write books to explain their beliefs. For example, ibn Ata Allah al-Iskandari wrote a book called the Hikam. Another writer, Ahmad Zarruq, wrote many different commentaries. Some people focus on writing beautiful poetry. They write poems to show their love for Muhammad. A famous poem is the Al-Burda, or "The Celestial Lights." Muhammad al-Jazuli and al-Busiri are well-known for these poems.

Abu al-Hasan al-Shadhili founded this order in the 13th century. To keep the path valid, every tariqah needs a spiritual chain. This is a list of teachers that links back to the start. Most of these chains begin with Ali ibn Abi Talib. They often split into two paths through his sons, Hasan and Husayn. This chain shows how the teachings are passed down through time.

The Shadhili way has many different branches across the globe. The Fassiyatush was started by Imam Fassi and is found in India and Pakistan. The Darqawiyya branch was founded in the late 18th century by Muhammad al-Arabi al-Darqawi. There is also the Alawi branch, which started in Algeria. This branch is now found in Syria, Jordan, and France. Some branches, like the Badawiyya, have groups in America too.

Followers often celebrate special times and visit important places. They hold an anniversary for al-Shadhili on the 12th of Shawwal. This happens at Humaithara in Egypt.

Some scholars look at how these ideas connect to other faiths. For instance, Miguel Asín Palacios suggested links to the teachings of John of the Cross. However, other thinkers like José Nieto believe these ideas grew on their own. It is a subject that many people continue to study and wonder about.
