The Mevlevi Order is a Sufi tradition that began in Konya, Turkey.

It was founded by the followers of Jalaluddin Muhammad Rumi. Rumi was a famous 13th-century poet and a mystic. Many people know the Mevlevis as the "whirling dervishes." This name comes from a special ceremony called the sema.

In this ceremony, participants are called semazens. They perform a ritual called dhikr to remember God. This practice is meant to help purify the heart. The order teaches that love is central to faith.

The sema ceremony follows a very specific set of steps. It begins with a singer offering a eulogy called the Naat-i Sharif.

This is followed by music played on a reed flute called a ney. Next, the semazens perform the Devr-i Veled, where they walk in a circle. They then remove their black cloaks, which represent death. The main part of the ceremony consists of the Four Salams. These musical movements represent different stages of spiritual growth. They move from knowledge to rapture, then to love, and finally to accepting destiny. The ceremony ends with a reading from the Quran.

The history of the order started after Rumi died in 1273. His son, Sultan Veled, helped establish the order.

Along with Husameddin Chelebi, they built Rumi's tomb in Konya. This tomb is still a place where many people go on special journeys. During the Ottoman period, the order spread to many places. It reached the Balkans, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, and Palestine. There were as many as 114 Sufi lodges in the empire. The order even had members who served in official roles.

There are many important names and facts in this history. In 2005, UNESCO named the sema ceremony a masterpiece of human heritage.

During World War I, a Mevlevi Regiment was formed in 1914. This unit included about 800 dervishes. In 1925, the new Turkish Republic made Sufism illegal. Because of this, the dervish lodge in Konya became the Mevlana Museum. Today, the head of the order is called the Çelebi. The current Çelebi is Faruk Hemdem Çelebi. He leads the International Mevlana Foundation.

The Mevlevi Order has a very deep link to the arts. They have produced many famous poets and musicians over the centuries. For example, Shaykh Ghalib Dede was a master of Turkish poetry. Many great composers, like Ismail Dede, wrote music for the sema.
