Followers use special ways to pray and connect with God. These are called five basic devotional practices or dhikr. One way is to say the names of Allah out loud. Another way is to say them very quietly. They also practice regulating their breath and meditating. Some people go into a quiet cell for forty days. This is a time for deep prayer and thinking.

This group started a long time ago in a town called Chisht. Abu Ishaq Shami was the founder of the order. He taught Sufism in that town in present-day Afghanistan. Later, a man named Mu'in al-Din Chishti brought it to South Asia. He lived in the 12th century and was very kind. He even gave his money to help the poor.

Mu'in al-Din Chishti moved to the city of Ajmer in India. He was the eighth person in the line of leaders. His tomb is a very famous place called the Dargah Sharif. Many people go on a special journey to visit it. After a leader named Farīduddīn Mas'ūd, the order split. It became the Chishti Nizami and the Chishti Sabri branches.
