Nefta is a special oasis town in Tunisia. It sits in the Tozeur Governorate. The town is north of the Chott el Djerid. It is 400 kilometers southwest of the capital city, Tunis. This place is part of a region called the Bled el Djerid. People often call this area the "Land of Palms." This is because many palm and olive trees grow here.

The town has two main parts. A small river called an oued divides them. To the east is the new town. The old souk quarter sits in its southwest corner. To the west, the old town sits on a hill. Many houses are shaped like cubes with flat roofs. In some streets, the top floors hang over the road. These floors use round arches to form a tunnel. This tunnel helps to protect people from the hot sun.

Nefta has a very long history. Some believe shepherds from the kingdom of Napata first lived here. Long ago, the Romans and Byzantines built forts to protect the oasis. In the 9th century, a writer named Ya'qubi called it one of four great cities. Nefta was a very important stop for trade caravans. It began to decline in the 15th century when trade fell. Later, the town saw a new start when the French arrived in 1881.

Many people visit Nefta for its religious meaning. It is a center for Sufism, which is a mystical branch of Islam. This movement grew around a man named Abu Madian in the 12th century. The name comes from the simple woolen clothes, or "suf," they wore. Nefta has more than 24 mosques and 100 marabouts. Marabouts are the tombs of holy men. Pilgrims travel from all over southern Tunisia and Algeria to visit them.

There are many fun things to see and do in Nefta. People celebrate a Folk Festival in April. There is also a Date Festival in November or December. You might even recognize the nearby salt-flats from the movies. The directors used them to film Star Wars in the late 20th century. They even chose this town to host the house for Luke Skywalker. It is a place where history and movies meet.
