Nefta is a municipality and a significant oasis located in the Tozeur Governorate of Tunisia. It sits north of the Chott el Djerid and is positioned 400 kilometers southwest of the national capital, Tunis. The town is a vital part of the Bled el Djerid region. This area is often called the "Land of Palms" because of its many palm and olive trees. Nefta serves as a major center for both religious life and regional history in southern Tunisia.

The town's layout is divided into two distinct sections by a small oued, which is a riverbed. To the east of this oued lies the new town. This area contains the old souk quarter at its southwestern corner. The main road from Tozeur, known as Avenue Habib Bourguiba, runs through this new town. To the west, the old town is situated on the slopes of a hill. The architecture here consists of cube-shaped houses with flat roofs. In many streets, the upper stories are supported by round-headed arches. These projecting floors create a tunnel effect to provide shade from the sun.

Nefta is a major spiritual center for Sufism. Sufism is a mystical branch of Islam that emphasizes spiritual contemplation and meditation. The movement grew significantly around the 12th century. It was centered around a holy man named Abu Madian, who died in 1197. The term "Sufi" comes from the word "suf," which refers to the simple woolen garments they wore. This lifestyle focused on modesty and asceticism, which means living with very few luxuries. Sufism also includes certain religious forms from the pre-Islamic Berber population.

Religious life in Nefta is marked by the presence of many sacred sites. The district of El Bayadha contains many religious buildings. The town is home to more than 24 mosques and 100 marabouts. A marabout is the tomb of a holy man. These tombs act as pilgrimage sites for people traveling from southern Tunisia and Algeria. Because of this deep religious importance, Nefta is sometimes called the "Kairouan of the South." Pilgrims visit these sites throughout the year to honor these revered figures.

The history of Nefta spans many different eras and empires. Some believe the area was originally settled by shepherds from the kingdom of Napata. During the Roman Empire, the town was known as Nepte. It served as the seat of a Christian bishopric at that time. The Byzantines also built forts in the oasis to protect against raids by desert nomads. In the mid-7th century, the Arabs conquered the area. Although the region converted to Islam, a Christian community was still recorded as late as 1194. In the 9th century, the writer Ya'qubi identified Nefta as one of four great metropolitan cities in the region of Castillia.

Economic life in Nefta has changed many times over the centuries. For a period, the town was a vital staging-point for trade caravans. It was once the most important such point in all of Tunisia. However, the town began to decline in the 15th century. This was caused by a falling caravan trade and more frequent raids by nomadic tribes. A period of renewal began in 1881 with the arrival of the French. Today, the town remains an important hub for travel. It is located 25 km southwest of Tozeur and 113 km southwest of Gafsa.

Nefta also holds a place in modern popular culture. The salt-flats near the town were used as a filming location for the Star Wars movies in the late 20th century. The film directors even chose Nefta to host the house of the character Luke Skywalker. Additionally, scenes from the 2001 French movie "La Vérité si je Mens! 2" were shot in the area. The town also hosts cultural events like a Folk Festival in April. In November or December, the community celebrates the Date Festival to honor the local harvest.
