They built the first major structures and mosques. They also created a system of underground water channels called khettara. This helped provide water to the growing city. The Almoravids established the original urban organization. This includes the area around the Jemaa el-Fnaa square.

This square began as a public space in front of palace gates.

Different groups of people brought new styles to Marrakesh. Andalusi craftsmen from cities like Cordoba and Seville worked here. They introduced the Cordoban Umayyad style of architecture. This style uses carved domes and cusped arches. This foreign influence merged with designs from the Sahara and West Africa. The result was a unique architectural style adapted to the local environment. This blend of cultures made Marrakesh a massive trading center for the Maghreb and sub-Saharan Africa.

The Almohad dynasty took control of the city in 1147.

A new golden age arrived in the early 16th century. The Saadian dynasty made Marrakesh the capital of Morocco again. Sultans like Ahmad al-Mansur built many sumptuous monuments.

One famous example is the El Badi Palace. This palace was built using expensive materials like marble from Italy. It was meant to impress foreign ambassadors from places like England and Spain. The Saadian period showed the great wealth and influence of the nation.

Religion has always been a key part of life in Marrakesh. Since the 17th century, it has been a site for Sufi pilgrims. Many people visit to see the tombs of the seven patron saints.
