Agadir is a major urban center located in Morocco. It sits on the Atlantic Ocean coast near the Atlas Mountains. The city is positioned just north of the Souss River mouth. It serves as the capital of the Souss-Massa region. Agadir is also the seat of the Agadir-Ida Ou Tanane Prefecture.

The name Agadir is a common Berber noun. It means a wall, an enclosure, or a fortified citadel. Some suggest it comes from the Tuareg word *aǧādir*. Others believe it has roots in Phoenician or Hebrew. In the local Tashelhit language, the name is Agadir Ighir. This literally means "the fortress of the cape."

Agadir is a vital hub for Berber culture in Morocco. The population is linguistically diverse. A majority of 58.3% speak Arabic as their native language. However, a sizable 40.7% natively speak Berber languages. This includes the local variety known as Tachelhit.

The city hosts many cultural festivals. These include celebrations such as Yennayer and Bujlood. Agadir is also the birthplace of famous Shilha music. Notable musical pillars include Izenzaren and Oudaden. These traditions make the city a central point for Berber heritage.

The history of the site involves many different powers. The oldest map showing the area is from 1325. It calls the location Porto Mesegina. In 1505, the Portuguese nobleman João Lopes de Sequeira occupied the area. He built a wooden castle near a spring. This created a colony named Santa Cruz do Cabo do Gué.

Local resistance grew against the Portuguese presence. In 1541, the Sa'di sultanate successfully besieged the colony. This victory forced the Portuguese to abandon much of their Moroccan territory. Following this, the Sa'di successor built a new fortress on the hill. This was called Agadir N'Ighir, meaning "fortified granary of the hill."

Trade and political tensions shaped the city later on. During the 17th century, Agadir was an important harbor. It traded goods like sugar, wax, copper, and hides. Europeans exchanged manufactured goods, textiles, and weapons in return. In 1731, a massive earthquake destroyed the town. This led to the closure of the harbor for a long time. By 1789, a traveler described the area as a ghost town. However, Sultan Hassan I reopened the harbor in 1881.

In 1911, the Agadir Crisis occurred here. This event involved tensions between France and Germany. It served as a precursor to World War I.

French influence changed the urban landscape in the 20th century. After 1920, a port was built under the French protectorate. The city developed districts like Talborjt and Yahchech. Around 1930, Agadir became a stop for the Aéropostale airmail service. Famous pilots like Saint-Exupéry frequented the area. Urban planners Henri Prost and Albert Laprade designed a modern central city. They used a horseshoe layout centered on the waterfront.

By the 1950s, the city grew through fishing, canning, and mining. It also began to develop its tourism infrastructure.

A catastrophic event redefined modern Agadir. On February 29, 1960, a magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck. The shaking lasted only 15 seconds. However, it almost totally destroyed the city.

The disaster killed an estimated 15,000 people. This was more than a third of the population at the time. The old Kasbah was also destroyed. In response, the city was completely rebuilt further south. Architects used mandatory seismic standards to ensure safety. This modern reconstruction allowed the city to grow rapidly.

Today, Agadir is Morocco's largest seaside resort. It attracts many foreign tourists and residents. The city is famous for its unusually mild year-round climate. In January, the average midday temperature is 20.5 °C.

This mild weather makes it a popular "winter sun" destination. The coastline features a beach stretching over 10 km.

The city also maintains a large port with four basins. These include commercial, fishing, and pleasure boat areas.
