Aït Benhaddou

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Aït Benhaddou is a historic ksar located in Morocco. A ksar is a type of fortified village. This site sits on the slopes of a hill next to the Ounila River. It is part of the Ounila Valley. This location was once a vital stop on a major caravan route. This route connected the Sahara Desert to the city of Marrakesh. Because of its importance, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

The village is built using traditional Moroccan earthen clay architecture. The primary materials include rammed earth, adobe, clay bricks, and wood. Rammed earth is also known by terms like pisé, tabia, or al-luh. To make it, workers compress earth and mud together. They often mix in other materials to help the layers stick. Many structures also use a mixture of earth and straw. This material is permeable, which means it can absorb water. Because of this, rain can erode the walls over time. If a village is abandoned, it can begin to crumble after only a few decades.

Architects used different materials to manage the weight of the buildings. Taller structures use rammed earth for the first floor. The upper floors are made of lighter adobe. This reduces the load on the lower walls. The layout of the ksar is very organized for defense. A defensive wall surrounds the buildings. This wall includes corner towers and a central gate. Inside, the buildings vary in size and shape. Some are modest houses, while others are tall structures with towers. Some upper parts feature decorative geometric motifs.

There are many important community buildings within the walls. The ksar contains a mosque and a caravanserai, which is a place for travelers. There are also several kasbahs, which are castle-like fortifications. You can find the Marabout of Sidi Ali or Amer here. The site also includes a public square and two cemeteries. One cemetery is for Muslims and the other is for Jewish people. At the very top of the hill, there is a large fortified granary called an agadir.

The history of Aït Benhaddou is tied to its strategic location. The site has been fortified since the 11th century during the Almoravid period. This was because it sat along a main trans-Saharan trade route. Travelers used this route to reach the Tizi n'Tichka pass. This pass was one of the few ways to cross the Atlas Mountains. It connected Marrakesh to the Dra'a Valley on the edge of the Sahara. While no current buildings date from before the 17th century, they use very old designs. Other fortified places, like Tamdaght, were located nearby along this same route.

In the 20th century, the valley lost its strategic importance. This caused the ksar to lose many of its residents. Today, the ksar is only sparsely inhabited by a few families. Most local people live in modern dwellings in a village across the river. They often make a living through agriculture or the tourist trade. In 2011, a new pedestrian bridge was completed. This bridge links the old ksar to the modern village. The goal is to make the site more accessible. It may also encourage people to move back into the historic houses.

Aït Benhaddou is famous globally as a filming location. Many Hollywood films and TV series have used the site. Examples include *Gladiator*, *Prince of Persia*, and *The Mummy*. It was also used in the series *Game of Thrones*. This fame has helped with the preservation of the site. A local committee manages and monitors the area. UNESCO notes that the site maintains its architectural authenticity. This is because workers use traditional materials instead of new concrete. However, the site faces new challenges. A large earthquake struck southern Morocco in September 2023. Early assessments reported cracks and partial collapses in the ksar. There is a risk of further collapses if the damage is not managed.
