Aït Benhaddou is a historic place in Morocco. It is a ksar, which is a fortified village. This village sits on a hill by the Ounila River. It is part of the Ounila Valley. This area was once a very important stop for traders. The route connected the Sahara desert to the city of Marrakesh.

The buildings are made from natural things like clay, wood, and straw. Many walls use a method called rammed earth. This means workers press earth and mud together very tightly. Some houses are small, but others are tall with towers. The upper floors use lighter adobe bricks to help the walls. This keeps the heavy weight off the bottom of the house.

People have used this site since the 11th century. This was during the Almoravid period. Most of the buildings we see today are from after the 17th century. They were built using very old and traditional ways. The site was vital for trade through the Atlas Mountains. It helped travelers cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass.

There are many special places inside the village walls. You can find a mosque and a public square. There are even two cemeteries, one for Muslims and one for Jewish people. At the top of the hill, there is an agadir. This is a large, fortified granary for storing grain.

Some buildings also have pretty geometric patterns on them.

Today, the ksar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This means it is a special place worth protecting. Many famous movies and TV shows are filmed here. You might recognize it from films like Gladiator or Prince of Persia. Most local people now live in a modern village across the river. A new pedestrian bridge was built in 2011 to connect the two areas.
