It serves as a grand gateway to the city and a symbol of Portugal's maritime power. For many years, it was a place where explorers began their long journeys. It also welcomed famous fleets as they returned from far away lands. This tower represents the Age of Discoveries and the history of the sea. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that people from all over the world visit.

The tower is built with very special details that tell a story. It uses a local, beige-white limestone called Lioz. The structure has two main parts: a wide bastion and a four-story tower.

Many carvings decorate the walls to celebrate sailing and the ocean. You can see stone shapes that look like twisted ropes and elegant knots. There are also armillary spheres, which are round tools used to study the stars. These decorations show the Manueline style, which is inspired by the sea.

Building this fort was a big project that took many years. King Manuel I ordered the construction to help protect the mouth of the Tagus River. He wanted a strong defense because the older forts were not enough. An architect named Francisco de Arruda designed the famous stronghold. In 1516, he began receiving many blocks of stone for the work.

A large, heavily armed ship called the Grande Nau guarded the river until the fort was finally finished in 1519.

History has brought many changes to the tower over the centuries. In 1580, the tower's garrison surrendered to Spanish forces after a short battle. Later, the dungeons inside the tower were used as a prison until 1830. During the 1600s, the tower even worked as a place to collect taxes from ships.

In the 1800s, French troops stayed in the tower during the Peninsular War. Even with all these changes, the tower remained a very important landmark for the people of Lisbon.

Many people think the tower was built in the middle of the river. They believe a big earthquake in 1755 moved the water away. However, the tower was actually built on a small island near the shore.

As the city grew, the shoreline moved closer to the stone walls. Now, it looks like it sits right on the riverbank. This makes the tower feel like a part of the land and the water at the same time.
