This fort was a gateway for explorers. It helped protect the city from ships. It also welcomed fleets coming home from far lands. The tower is built from a local white stone called Lioz. It has a big base and a tall tower with four floors.

The tower shows off a style called Manueline. This style uses art inspired by the sea. You can see stone carvings that look like twisted ropes and knots. There are also armillary spheres, which are round tools used to study the stars. These shapes celebrate Portugal's history of sailing. The walls even have carvings of a rhinoceros. This was a gift from a ruler in India. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. People visit it to see a true symbol of history.
