The ground shook for three to six minutes. This event was very powerful. Experts say it had a magnitude of 7.7 or more. This is a way to measure how strong a shake is. The earthquake caused many buildings to fall. It also caused deep cracks in the city.

After the shaking, a tsunami arrived. A tsunami is a series of giant ocean waves. The sea first pulled back from the shore. Then, huge waves rushed into the harbor.

These waves hit the city and many coastal towns.

Fires also broke out across Lisbon. Candles fell over in homes and churches. This started a firestorm that burned for many hours. The earthquake, the waves, and the fires destroyed most of the city. Many people died, and many books and art were lost.

Leaders worked hard to fix the damage. They chose to build a new city with wider streets. They even made special wooden parts to help buildings stay up during shakes.
