It happened in a place called Huaxian. This event is known as the Jiajing Great Earthquake. It was one of the deadliest shakes in Chinese history.

Many people lived in caves called yaodongs. These were man-made caves in high cliffs. When the earth shook, the caves fell down. This buried many people while they slept. Landslides also caused many deaths.

Scientists think the shake had a magnitude of 7.9. This is a way to measure how strong a shake is. The shaking was very strong. It even made a tall pagoda in Xi'an shorter by three levels.

About 100,000 people died from the shake itself. Many others died from hunger or sickness later. In total, the number of people in the area dropped by 830,000.

After the big shake, smaller shakes called aftershocks happened. They came several times a month for half a year. The earthquake changed the land for a long time.
