Western Xia

history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Tangut people built a great empire in China.

This kingdom was called Western Xia. It lasted from the year 1038 to 1227. The Tanguts lived in north-central China. Their main city was Xingqing. Today, we call that place Yinchuan.

The empire sat on the Silk Road. This was a very important trade route. It connected northern China to Central Asia. Because of this, the Tanguts became quite strong. They had a powerful military. They used horses, chariots, and even cannons on camels.
