Western Xia

history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Western Xia was a powerful empire in north-central China.

It was led by the Tangut people from 1038 to 1227 AD. This kingdom had a very long and grand name. Some people called it the Great Xia of the White and Lofty. Others called it the State of Ten Thousand Secrets.

The empire sat right on the Silk Road. This was a major path for trading goods. It connected northern China to Central Asia. Because they controlled this route, the Tanguts became very wealthy and influential.

The Tanguts were experts at protecting their land.

They built a military that could fight on land and water. Their soldiers used horses and chariots for fast movement. They also used bows and shields in battle. One very interesting thing they used was artillery. They even carried small cannons on the backs of camels!

This mix of tools helped them stand strong against other large empires. They could defend their borders against many different neighbors.

The history of the Tanguts began long before their empire started.

Many years ago, they lived in the highlands of western Sichuan. They moved many times because of pressure from other groups. In the 600s, they worked with the Sui and Tang dynasties. However, these relationships were often difficult and full of conflict. By the 700s, they were a major power in the Ordos region. Eventually, they grew strong enough to form their own official state.

The empire had important cities and unique culture.

Their capital city was Xingqing, which is known as Yinchuan today. Another famous place was the city of Khara-Khoto. The Tanguts created beautiful art, music, and buildings. They even had their own special way of writing.

This unique script is now extinct, meaning no one can read it today. Only small pieces of their literature still exist for us to find.

Everything changed in the year 1227 AD.

The Mongols arrived and destroyed the Western Xia empire. Most of their buildings and written records were lost during this time. Because so much was destroyed, their history became a mystery for a long time. It was not until the 20th century that researchers began to solve the puzzle. Now, we use old coins and stone carvings to learn their story.

We are finally rediscovering the world of the Tanguts.
