At times, the leaders moved their capital to a place called Xiadu. Yan was one of the strongest lands in China. It survived even when the power of the Zhou kings began to fade. This state played a big role in early Chinese history.

Yan was a very large territory. It stretched from the Yellow River all the way to the Yalu River. The land went from the mountains of Shanxi to the Liaodong Peninsula.

Because Yan was the northernmost state, it faced many challenges. Steppe nomads often tried to enter the land. To stay safe, the people of Yan built great walls. They also used special money shaped like knives. This knife-shaped money helped them trade with the northern tribes.

The history of Yan began in the early first millennium BC. Long ago, King Wu of Zhou gave titles to many nobles. This included the rulers of Yan. In the 11th century BC, the capital was in a place called Liulihe. Archaeologists found over 200 tombs there. They also found a bronze vessel called a ding. This vessel tells a story about the son of the Duke of Yan. He traveled to meet the King of Zhou.

Yan had many rivals, especially the state of Qi. In 314 BC, Qi invaded Yan. This was a hard time for the country. Later, Yan fought back with the help of other states. A leader named Yue Yi led a successful campaign against Qi. He helped take back many walled cities. However, the wars were difficult to manage. Eventually, the powerful state of Qin began to grow. In 227 BC, a man named Jing Ke tried to kill the King of Qin. This mission failed, and the King of Qin was very angry.

After the Qin dynasty fell in 207 BC, Yan became independent for a short time. A man named Zang Tu became king during this period. He later tried to rebel against the Han dynasty. The Han eventually took direct control of the land. Today, we learn about Yan through beautiful bronze items and old stories.
