Qi was a famous state in ancient China during the Zhou dynasty. It was located on the Shandong peninsula in a place we now call Shandong. The state began shortly after the Zhou people conquered the Shang dynasty. A legendary man named Jiang Ziya became the very first ruler. He was a chief minister to King Wu before he ruled Qi. His family held power for many hundreds of years.

As time passed, Qi grew very strong and important. Under the rule of Duke Huan, the state reached its peak. He worked with a smart minister named Guan Zhong to build power. They made the central government much stronger than before. They also took control of salt and iron to help the state. Duke Huan was even chosen as a leader for other states. He was called a hegemon-protector because he helped keep peace.

Life in Qi was very organized and interesting. The capital city was named Linzi. The cities were built in neat rectangular shapes. They had roads that followed a very strict grid pattern.

Even the palaces were placed carefully to create balance. They built large walls to keep their people safe from enemies. The Great Wall of Qi is the oldest Great Wall in China. It stretches across mountain ridges all the way to the sea.

Qi was also a very special place for learning and thought. Many famous scholars traveled from all over China to visit. They gathered at a place called the Jixia Academy. This was not a single building but a group of thinkers. They worked together to share new ideas and study the world. Famous people like the philosopher Mencius were connected to this time.

This made Qi a center for great wisdom.

Eventually, the family in charge changed from the Jiangs to the Tians. The Tian family took full control of the state in 386 BCE. This happened during a time when many states were fighting. The era of many states finally ended when the Qin state conquered Qi. Qi was the very last state to be taken by Qin in 222 BCE. This big change marked the start of Imperial China. The history of Qi remains a major part of China's story.
