Qi was a powerful regional state during the Zhou dynasty in ancient China. It occupied much of the Shandong peninsula and surrounding areas. The state was a major political and cultural force for centuries. Its capital was the city of Linzi, located in modern-day Shandong. Qi is notable for its long history and its influence on Chinese governance. It was also a center for intellectual life and advanced urban planning.

The state began following the Zhou conquest of the Shang dynasty. The first ruler was Jiang Ziya, also known as Lord Tai. He served as a chief minister to King Wu before ruling Qi. His family held power for several centuries. During this early period, the state faced various challenges. The native Dongyi peoples lived within these boundaries. Over time, many of these people were absorbed into the Zhou cultural sphere. Some local groups continued to revolt for many years.

Qi reached its highest level of power during the Spring and Autumn period. Duke Huan of Qi became a dominant leader from 685 to 643 BCE. He worked closely with his minister, Guan Zhong, to strengthen the state. They moved power from local nobles to the central government. They established a system of counties ruled by state ministers. Guan Zhong also created state monopolies on salt and iron. These economic reforms helped the state grow very wealthy.

Duke Huan was recognized as a hegemon-protector, or Bà. This meant he was sworn to protect the Zhou royal house. He was the first of five such hegemons in Chinese history. He led alliances of states to fight common enemies. He also provided food and soldiers to protect people from nomads. However, a war of succession after his death weakened Qi. The state later fought major battles, such as the Battle of Chengpu in 632 BCE. It also fought the Battle of An in 589 BCE.

During the Warring States period, the ruling family changed. The Tian clan began to gain influence over the Jiang family. In 532 BCE, the Tian clan destroyed several rival families. They eventually took control of most of the state. By 386 BCE, the House of Tian officially replaced the House of Jiang. This period was marked by constant conflict between many states. Qi remained a significant power until its final days.

Qi was famous for its advanced culture and learning. The Jixia Academy was a major intellectual center in Linzi. It was not one building, but a group of sponsored scholars. These thinkers came from all over China to collaborate. Renowned figures like the philosopher Mencius were connected to this era. The state also had a reputation for beautiful music. The scholar Wu Qi noted that the people's nature reflected their environment. This intellectual tradition made Qi a leader in thought.

Urban design in Qi was very sophisticated and organized. Cities were often rectangular with a neat grid of roads. The capital, Linzi, featured a carefully balanced layout. The palace faced south to maintain proper orientation. To the east sat the ancestral temple. To the west sat the temple of the gods. This arrangement ensured balance within the city. Smaller estates, called chengyi, also followed strict patterns. They often featured square courtyards surrounded by walls.

Defense was a major priority for the people of Qi. They built the Great Wall of Qi to protect against neighbors. Construction began in 441 BCE to defend against Jin and Yue. This is the oldest existing Great Wall in China. The wall stretches across mountain ridges to the Yellow Sea. It covers a massive distance of approximately 600 kilometers. The wall helped protect the state from many different enemies. Finally, the state of Qi was conquered by Qin in 222 BCE. This was the last state to fall, marking the start of Imperial China.
