Wu (state)

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The state of Wu was a powerful land in ancient China. It sat near the mouth of the Yangtze River.

This area is where the cities of Suzhou and Shanghai are today. Wu was different from the central Chinese states. The people there spoke a unique language. They also had different customs, like wearing short hair and having tattoos.

These traditions made them stand out from their neighbors.

Wu began with a famous story about a man named Taibo.

Taibo was the oldest son of a leader named Gugong Danfu. He had two brothers named Zhongyong and Jili. Taibo did not want to fight for the throne. He chose to leave his home instead. He moved southeast to the Wu region with his followers. They built their first capital at a place called Meili. This move helped start a new royal line in a new land.

Wu became very strong during the 6th century BC. A leader named King Helü helped the state rise to power.

He worked with a famous advisor named Wu Zixu. Wu Zixu wanted to seek revenge against the State of Chu. He also worked with the great strategist Sun Tzu. Sun Tzu wrote a famous book called The Art of War. Together, they led Wu to many big victories. One great win was at the Battle of Boju in 506 BC. This victory helped King Helü become one of the Five Hegemons.

Wu was also known for building a very smart navy.

They used different kinds of ships for different jobs. Some ships were called "great wing" or "little wing" ships. These worked like chariots on land. They also had "stomach striker" ships that acted like battering rams. Other ships were called "castle ships" or "bridge ships." These were like moving towers or light cavalry on the water. Their skill with metal was also amazing. They made beautiful swords using gold, silver, and a lot of tin.

Even a strong state can face hard times. A state to the south called Yue became a rival.

King Goujian of Yue was once a servant to the King of Wu. Later, Goujian returned home and planned a way to fight back. In 482 BC, he led a surprise attack on the Wu capital. The state of Wu could not recover from this. By 473 BC, the state of Yue took over the land. The name Wu still lives on today in the name of the local language.
