The state of Jin was a major power in ancient China. It was located in the middle of the land. The state sat on the Shanxi plateau near the Fen River.

This area was very important for travel and trade. To the north lived the Xirong and Beidi peoples. To the south was the large state of Chu. Jin was in a perfect spot to grow. Its leaders could reach many different lands from there.

Jin grew strong through many different ways. The leaders used their location to expand their borders. They moved north to take lands from tribes. They moved southwest to fight the state of Qin. They also moved southeast to reach smaller states.

The state also had a very organized military. They had three main armies to protect the land. These were the upper, central, and lower armies. Each army had 12,500 soldiers in it.

History shows that Jin began during the Zhou dynasty. King Cheng of Zhou gave the land to his brother. This man was named Tang Shuyu.

Later, the son of Tang Shuyu changed the name to Jin. For a long time, the rulers of Jin were very strong. One famous ruler was Duke Wen. He spent 19 years living in other lands before he returned. He led Jin to a great victory at the Battle of Chengpu. This win made him a top leader called a hegemon.

Many people and places shaped the history of Jin. The capital moved several times over the years. It started at Tang near modern Qucun. Later, the leaders moved to E, Jiang, and Xintian.

The state also used many different bronze items. Archaeologists have found bronze mirrors and even bronze daggers.

These objects show us how people lived and worked back then.

Eventually, the power in Jin began to shift. The dukes lost control to large noble families. These families were called clans. Six clans eventually held most of the power.

These clans fought with each other for a long time. Finally, three clans named Han, Zhao, and Wei took over. In 403 BC, the Zhou court recognized these three new states. This event ended one period of history and started another.
