Cao Wei was a very important state in China. It was part of the Three Kingdoms period. This was a time when China was split into three parts.

The state was also called Former Wei. Historians call it Cao Wei to tell it apart from other states. It held power over much of northern China. The leaders first stayed in Xuchang. Later, they moved the capital to Luoyang. This state shaped how much power the central government held.

To rule, the state used a special system. Cao Pi wanted to make the central government stronger. He created two new government bodies to help him.

A man named Chen Qun made the nine-rank system. This system helped decide who could work in the government. It used different ranks for different people. This system lasted for a long time in China. It even stayed until the Sui dynasty changed it. The state also changed how provinces were run to keep more control.

Cao Wei began during the end of the Han dynasty. A leader named Cao Cao laid the foundations. In 213 AD, the government named him the Duke of Wei. He was given ten cities to rule.

Cao Cao died on March 15, 220 AD. His son, Cao Pi, took over his title. On December 11, 220 AD, Cao Pi became the emperor. This officially started the state of Wei. Other leaders like Liu Bei and Sun Quan also claimed power during this time.

Wei had to fight many wars to protect its borders. They fought against the states of Shu and Wu.

Between 228 and 234, Shu attacked the western borders. Wei generals like Sima Yi helped stop these attacks. In 238, Sima Yi led 40,000 troops to capture Liaodong. This was a very big military mission. Wei also fought the Goguryeo Kingdom in 242. These wars were hard and changed the land. The military was a huge part of daily life.

Over time, the ruling Cao family lost its power. In 249 AD, Sima Yi took control from a regent named Cao Shuang. This was a big change for the empire. The later emperors were often just puppets for the Sima family.

Sima Yi's grandson was Sima Yan. In 266 AD, Sima Yan forced the last Wei emperor to step down. He started the Jin dynasty instead. This ended the era of Cao Wei. Many things from Wei, like new writing styles, stayed in Chinese culture.
