The ruling clan was called the Tuoba. They were part of the Xianbei people. Some historians think they might have had a Turkic background. This dynasty helped bring order to a very chaotic time. It ended a period of many small, fighting states.

Building this empire took many years of hard work and war. Early on, the Tuoba leaders had to fight many neighbors. They first had to deal with the Later Yan dynasty. In 395 AD, the Yan sent a large army to attack them. However, the Wei won a big victory at the Battle of Canhe Slope.

Later, Emperor Taiwu worked to bring the whole north together. In 439 AD, he finally unified northern China. This ended the long period of the Sixteen Kingdoms.

Life in the Northern Wei was also shaped by new ideas. Buddhism became a very important religion during this time. People built amazing things to show their faith. They created the Yungang Grottoes near the city of Datong. Later, they built the Longmen Grottoes near the capital of Luoyang.

In these stone caves, researchers found over 30,000 Buddhist images. These carvings are beautiful examples of art from that era. They show how deeply the religion had taken root.

Leaders also made big changes to how the land was run. Empress Dowager Feng and Emperor Xiaowen were very important leaders. They introduced reforms to help the government control the countryside better.

Emperor Xiaowen even moved the capital to Luoyang in 494 AD. He also helped the Tuoba clan adopt Chinese customs. This included changing their family name to Yuan. These changes helped different groups of people live together more easily.

Even great empires can face hard times. Toward the end, the Northern Wei had many internal arguments. In 534 to 535 AD, the empire split into two parts. These were the Eastern Wei and the Western Wei.

These two groups were eventually replaced by new dynasties. Even though the Tuoba rule ended, their ideas stayed. Their ways of ruling helped shape later Chinese history for a long time.
