A leader named Tuoba Gui started this era. He later became the Emperor of Wei.

For many years, northern China was split into many small states. This was a time of much fighting. In 439 AD, Emperor Taiwu unified the north. This brought peace to the region.

During this time, new ideas arrived. Buddhism became a very important religion. People made beautiful art to honor it. They carved more than 30,000 images into stone.

Leaders also made big changes to how they ruled. Empress Dowager Feng and Emperor Xiaowen helped the state grow. They moved the capital city to Luoyang in 494 AD. This helped the leaders stay in control.

Near the end, the group had many fights inside. In 534 AD, the empire split into two parts. These were called the Eastern Wei and the Western Wei. Even after they split, their ideas changed China for a long time.
