He lived during a time called the Three Kingdoms period. Sima Yi was a general, a politician, and a regent. A regent is someone who rules for a young leader. He helped the state of Cao Wei grow strong. His family became one of the most powerful families in China. His grandson, Sima Yan, eventually started the Jin dynasty in February 266. Sima Yi's life was full of big changes and hard choices.

Sima Yi grew up in a very strict home.

His father was Sima Fang, a government official in Luoyang. In his house, Sima Yi had to follow many rules. He could not speak to his father without being asked first. He could not even sit in the same room as his father unless told to do so. When wars broke out, his family moved to Wen County. There, Sima Yi and his brothers lived as farmers. They worked the land and studied hard while protecting themselves from bandits.

Sima Yi was known for being very smart and brave.

A man named Cao Cao wanted Sima Yi to work for him. At first, Sima Yi did not want to join the government. He even pretended to be sick with a disease called rheumatism. He stayed in bed so spies would think he could not move. However, Cao Cao was a very strong leader. He told his officials to arrest Sima Yi if he did not join. Sima Yi became afraid and finally took the job in 208.

As he grew older, Sima Yi did many important jobs. He helped with farming and helped run the government well. He also led armies to stop invasions from rival states. Between 231 and 234, he defended Wei against the state of Shu. He also defeated Meng Da in the Xincheng Rebellion.

In 239, he became a regent for the young leader Cao Fang. He worked with another regent named Cao Shuang. At first, they were friendly, but they soon had many disagreements. Sima Yi eventually took full control of the government in 249.

Sima Yi's family had a very long history in China. His ancestor, Sima Ang, was once the King of Yin. Sima Yi had seven brothers in total. They were all known as the "Eight Das" because of their names. Sima Yi died on 7 September 251 at the age of 71 or 72. His eldest son, Sima Shi, took over his work. After him, the Sima family held almost all the power in Wei. This path eventually led to the start of a whole new dynasty.
