He worked for two different emperors. First, he served King Zheng. This king later became the famous Qin Shi Huang, the First Emperor. Later, Li Si served Qin Er Shi, the eighteenth son of the first emperor. Many people believe Li Si was one of the most important figures in Chinese history.

Li Si had many big ideas about how to run a country. He believed that the best people should lead based on their skills. This is called merit. He did not think only royal family members should have power. Instead, he wanted talented ministers to lead the empire. He also worked to make the government run smoothly.

He helped the emperor bring many different lands together. He did this by making laws and rules that everyone followed. He also made sure everyone used the same weights and measures. This helped trade and daily life work better for everyone.

Li Si was born in a place called Cai in the state of Chu. When he was young, he saw how different lives changed a person's status. He noticed how rats in a barn were well-fed while rats in an outhouse were hungry. This made him think about how people's lives depend on their situation. He decided to study politics to change his own life. He studied with a famous thinker named Xunzi.

After his studies, he moved to the powerful state of Qin. There, he met important leaders like Lü Buwei and King Zheng. His smart ideas helped him rise to a very high position.

As a leader, Li Si helped create a unified culture. He helped make a standard way of writing called small seal script. This meant people from different places could read the same things. He also helped organize the military and the borders.

However, he also made some very tough choices. In 213 BC, he helped order the destruction of many books. He thought some books were dangerous to the state. He believed only the government should control political ideas. This period was a very difficult time for many scholars.

At the end of his life, things became very hard for Li Si. After the first emperor died, Li Si helped another man named Zhao Gao take power. This was a mistake because Zhao Gao eventually turned against him.

Zhao Gao accused Li Si of being a traitor. Li Si was punished and died in 208 BC. Even though his life ended sadly, his work changed China forever. His ideas about writing and government helped shape Chinese culture for thousands of years. His efforts helped turn many separate states into one large nation.
