Du Mu was a famous poet and writer in China. He lived during the late Tang dynasty. People remember him for his beautiful and romantic quatrains. A quatrain is a short poem with four lines. He was a major part of a golden age for Chinese poetry. Many people group him with the poet Li Shangyin. They call this pair the "Little Li-Du." This name helps distinguish them from the "Great Li-Du." That title belongs to the famous poets Li Bai and Du Fu.

Writing was a special skill for Du Mu. He was good at many styles of writing. He wrote shi, which are poems, and fu, which are rhythmic prose. He also wrote ancient Chinese prose and long stories in verse. His poems often used classical imagery and clever wordplay. He liked to use striking juxtapositions in his work. This means he put different ideas side by side. His poems often focused on romantic scenes or old historical sites. He also wrote about things like separation and sadness.

Du Mu had a very busy life in the government. He was born into the Jingzhao Du clan in the capital, Chang'an. His grandfather was Du You, a famous minister and encyclopedia maker. Du Mu passed a big exam called the jinshi in 828. He was only 25 years old at that time. He held many different jobs as a bureaucrat. He worked as an editor and a censor. He also served as a governor in many small, poor towns.

His life had many ups and downs. In 835, he moved to Luoyang to avoid political trouble. He once went to Yangzhou to care for his brother, Du Yi. His brother was sick and had become blind. Du Mu worked in many places like Xuanzhou and Huzhou. He sometimes felt his career was not a big success. He even wrote poems about his unhappiness with his jobs. He died in 852, just before the next lunar year.

We can still see his influence in the world today. One of his famous poems is about the Qingming Festival. This is a day when people visit graves to honor ancestors. Another poem is "Autumn Evening," which mentions the Cowherd and Weaver Girl stars. His words even reached the world of rock music. In 1968, Roger Waters from Pink Floyd used his lines. He used them for the song "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun." This shows how his poetry still moves people.
